Creator Name Professor Thomas Purdie
Admin History Thomas Purdie was born in Lanarkshire on January 27th, 1843. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy. Spent time in Spain and Argentina after finishing school pursuing a business career. Enrolled as student of Royal School of Mines on return to England when 29 years old. Appointed Demonstrator in the Chemical Laboratories at South Kensington, 1875. Studied at the Univerisity of Wurzburg under Johannes Wislecenus 1878-1880 for PhD. Married Marianne Rotherham from Coventry in 1878. Appointed Chemistry Chair in St Andrews in 1884. Worked to establish a School of Chemistry there. Elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society 1895. Received LL.D from University of Aberdeen, 1894, LL.D from University of St Andrews, 1909, title of Professor Emeritus from University of St Andrews, 1909. Retired 1909. Died December 14th, 1916.
